As we gather with loved ones, this season gives us a chance to reflect on the year we have shared together and the many ways our community continues to grow, support one another, and move forward.
In 2025, Grande Prairie was shaped by the voices, ideas, and aspirations of our residents. Every major step we took this year reflected what we heard from the community: The need for more recreation options, stronger healthcare access, safer neighbourhoods, and room for the growing number of families who choose to build their lives here.
A clear example of this is the Multisport Dome. Residents told us how important year-round recreation is for our youth, families, and athletes. In response, the City advanced a facility designed for everyone, offering a FIFA-sized indoor field, flexible sport space, and an indoor track. Following the August groundbreaking and construction start in September, the Dome is well on its way to opening in July 2026 – creating new opportunities for active living and strengthening Grande Prairie as a sport-hosting destination.
Our community pride was equally visible in the events that filled the year. From Grande North Winterfest to Canada Day, the GP Stompede, sport tournaments, and the Grande Prairie Triathlon, residents showed up in remarkable numbers to celebrate, cheer, and connect.
A highlight was welcoming around 1,000 athletes for the Special Olympics Summer Games, a powerful reminder of the hospitality and heart that define our city. Family-friendly programs like the new Dive-in
Movie Night at the Eastlink Centre added more opportunities for residents of all ages to make memories together.
Public safety remained a top priority in 2025. The Grande Prairie Police Service reached an important milestone in December with the deployment of its first fully GPPS-staffed shift. With 54 sworn officers now serving and 10 more recruits graduating in March, the Service is more than halfway to its full complement of 110 officers. This progress reflects our belief in local policing that understands our neighbourhoods, supports our families, and builds strong relationships across the community.
Grande Prairie continued to attract new residents and investment in 2025. Housing activity reached its highest level in five years, with $165 million in building permit value and starts nearly double last year’s totals. Our low vacancy rate of 1.9 per cent shows that people see Grande Prairie as a place of possibility, opportunity, and long term stability.
Healthcare remained a key focus throughout 2025. The launch of the Northern Alberta Medical Program, ongoing Coffee with Council and appreciation events, and the groundbreaking of the Maskwa Medical Centre all reflect our commitment to ensuring residents can access care close to home. These efforts support a healthcare system that is responsive, stable, and centred on community needs.
As we look toward a new year, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to every resident, volunteer, business owner, and partner who helps make Grande Prairie a welcoming place.
